The Zone System
Ansel Adams' method for precise exposure control. Previsualize your tones, meter with intent, and place every element of your scene exactly where you want it.
What is the Zone System?
Previsualization and tonal control
Developed by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer in the late 1930s, the Zone System is a technique for precise control over tonal values in a photograph. Instead of accepting whatever the meter gives you, you decide in advance where each tone in the scene should fall in the final print.
The system divides the tonal range from pure black to pure white into 11 zones (0 through X), each separated by exactly one stop of exposure. Zone V is middle gray (18% reflectance), which is what every light meter is calibrated to read.
The key insight: a spot meter reading tells you where a subject would fall if exposed at Zone V. By knowing this, you can "place" that subject on any zone by adjusting exposure. Meter a shadow area, then underexpose by 2 stops to place it on Zone III (dark with detail). The highlights will fall wherever they fall based on the scene's contrast range.
Zones 0 through X
Each zone represents one stop of exposure difference. The entire range from Zone 0 to Zone X spans 10 stops.

The critical zones
Zone III is the lowest zone with visible detail. Zone VII is the highest with visible detail. Most photographic prints contain their important information between Zones III and VII - a range of just 4 stops. Controlling where your subject falls within this range is what the Zone System is about.
How to Meter with Zones
The classic Zone System workflow for metering in the field. This assumes a spot meter (or spot metering mode in your camera or app).
Identify the key shadow area
Find the darkest area in your scene where you want to retain detail. This is typically Zone III. A deep shadow in a landscape, the dark side of a face, the interior of a building.
Spot meter the shadow
Take a spot reading of that shadow area. Your meter will give you a reading that places it at Zone V (middle gray). Remember: all meters assume everything is Zone V.
Place the shadow on Zone III
Close down 2 stops from the meter reading. This "places" the shadow on Zone III - dark but with visible detail. If the meter says f/8 at 1/60, you expose at f/8 at 1/250 (or f/16 at 1/60).
Check where highlights fall
Spot meter the brightest important area. Count the stops between it and your shadow. If the highlights read 5 stops above the shadow, they'll fall on Zone VIII (bright with some texture). If 7 stops above, Zone X (pure white - no detail).
Decide and expose
If the contrast range fits within your film's latitude, expose. If not, you have choices: change composition, add fill light, use a different film, or accept the clipping. With negative film, you have more room. With slide film, every stop counts.
The shorthand
"Expose for the shadows, develop for the highlights." Place your important shadows on Zone III (or wherever you want them) and let the highlights fall. If the contrast is too high, reduce development (N-1, N-2). If too low, increase it (N+1, N+2). This is the full Zone System: controlling both exposure and development.
Dynamic Range by Film Type
Different film types can capture different ranges of zones. This determines how much contrast your scene can have before you lose detail in shadows or highlights.
Color Negative Film
The most forgiving film type. Color negatives can handle overexposure well - you can place shadows higher (Zone IV) and still retain highlight detail. Portra 400 is especially latitude-friendly.
Rule of thumb: Expose for the shadows. Overexposure is safer than under.
Black & White Negative
The widest dynamic range, especially with development adjustments. B&W negative film is what the Zone System was designed for. You can expand (N+) or compress (N-) the contrast range through development.
Rule of thumb: Expose for shadows, develop for highlights.
Slide / Reversal Film
The least forgiving. Slide film has extremely narrow latitude. Highlights blow out fast and underexposure goes to black. Metering must be precise. Zone System discipline is essential here.
Rule of thumb: Expose for the highlights. Protect Zone VII/VIII at all costs.
Infrared Film
IR film responds unpredictably to different materials - foliage glows white (Zone VIII+), water goes dark (Zone II-III), sky goes black (Zone 0). Standard metering rules don't fully apply; bracket generously.
Rule of thumb: Bracket +/- 2 stops. Learn through experience.
Why this matters
A scene with 8 stops of contrast (shadow to highlight) fits comfortably on color negative film but exceeds slide film's range by 3 stops. With slide film, you'd need to sacrifice either shadow detail (expose for highlights) or highlight detail (expose for shadows). The Zone System helps you make that choice intentionally.
